He's Got It Covered!

I arrived late to my mom's house in South Carolina my dad is having surgery early in the morning. In order to be ther at 5:30, I knew that I would need to take care of getting mostly ready tonight. My mom was already asleep when I arrived so I decided to take a shower downstairs so as not to disturb her.

So I got my suitcase out and laid everything out. I then, because I needed a towel and washcloth tiptoed up the very creaky stairs, came back down through the dining, then the breakfast room, then the kitchen, then the back hallway to the back bathroom. Finally a shower.

The shower was a welcome relief after a long day. I was tired, now to dry off and get in the bed. I reached for my sought after aforementioned towel... I shook it out in expectation of being wrapped in warmth...Much to my chagrin, it was a bath mat, a foot towel. I laughed so hard for a while... I had to to have time to dry off. But in that time this thought emerged... I am so glad that when it really counts... Like for my dad's surgery tomorrow, I am covered. God is faithful, not matter what I can trust that He will never come up short.

Psalm 91
Whoever lives under the shelter of the Most High will remain in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “⌊You are⌋ my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.” He is the one who will rescue you from hunters’ traps and from deadly plagues. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge. His truth is your shield and armor. You do not need to fear terrors of the night, arrows that fly during the day, plagues that roam the dark, epidemics that strike at noon. They will not come near you, even though a thousand may fall dead beside you or ten thousand at your right side. You only have to look with your eyes to see the punishment of wicked people. You, O Lord, are my refuge! You have made the Most High your home. No harm will come to you. No sickness will come near your house. He will put his angels in charge of you to protect you in all your ways. They will carry you in their hands so that you never hit your foot against a rock. You will step on lions and cobras. You will trample young lions and snakes. Because you love me, I will rescue you. I will protect you because you know my name. When you call to me, I will answer you. I will be with you when you are in trouble. I will save you and honor you. I will satisfy you with a long life. I will show you how I will save you. (Psalms 91:1-16 GWT)

Lose Something?

John and Betty Stam were missionaries to China. Their story is worth retelling. You can find the history of their story here. The part of their story that has impacted mine is a prayer that Betty wrote along her journey. You can see the evidence in her life.

Lord, I give up all my own plans and purposes
All my own desires and hopes
And accept Your will for my life.
I give myself, my life, my all
Utterly to You to be Yours forever.
Fill me and seal me with Your Holy Spirit
Use me as You will, send me where You will
And work out Your whole will in my life at any cost now and forever.
(Betty Stam's Prayer, modernized a bit)

Wonder if this was the verse she was pondering the day her heart wrote this prayer.

The person who tries to preserve his life will lose it, but the person who loses his life for me will preserve it. Matthew 10:39

Lord, may I not just give you parts of my life, consume me.

Take a Deep Breathe

Over the last few weeks, in conversations with very different people who were in various circumstances the concept of how we breathe came up. I believe that many times, whether we sigh, or groan, as Christians, it is prayer. The part of our lives that we can not put into words. Whether because of great pain, anxiety, or confusion, God hears our heart. After the sigh, it is certainly the prayers that we pray along the way that allows God to weave our journey with His will, but also I think there is a time that we have to stop and take a deep breathe.

As we grow from a baby to a mature adult, our normal breathe goes from 30 breaths to 15 breaths per minute. As we mature, maybe we can go longer between breaths because we have greater lung capacity, but there are still times that we have to take a deep breathe.

So as we journey with God, we breathe, we sigh, we groan. How do we take a deep breathe? A few right answers seem to fly in the face of reason when you consider that most of the reasons we sign or groan are because we are busy or physically not well or serving those we love. These circumstances are the very reasons that we give to avoid taking a deep breathe.

"The apostles then rendezvoused with Jesus and reported on all that they had done and taught. Jesus said, 'Come off by yourselves; let’s take a break and get a little rest.' For there was constant coming and going. They didn’t even have time to eat." Mark 6:31 The Message

Take a Deep Breathe
In our local church we have the fall women's retreat "Live the Adventure" coming up. If you are a lady that attends Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene, why not intentionally come away with Him?
On the VA District we have Team Day. If you are a leader in your local church, why not attend a gathering of other leaders and breathe deep?
On the VA District also is the Escape Retreat. Why not join others in His Presence for a time of refreshing?

These are not so much to learn, but breathe deep in the Presence of God and allow Him to give you rest.

Live the Adventure

Most of the songs that we sing in Kids Church have motions that go along to help the kids understand what we are saying and stay engaged. "Trust in the Lord", which is Proverbs 3:5-6 put to music, begins with the sign language sign for "trust", which is to grasp your hands as if grasping a rope. We add a little extra to it, which I like by leaning back as if to base our balance on the rope we are holding.

Galatians 2:20 "I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live I live by believing in God’s Son, who loved me and took the punishment for my sins."

In light of the mercy and grace of God, based on His goodness and love, my goal is to hang by this thread, what I mean is that my whole existence is dependent not on my own balance or my own leverage, but rather on my faith, my grasp of Him, of His Good News, of Jesus. Knowing that He is holding me and making His dwelling in me. Sometimes I talk to someone, hear a song, or tell a story that reminds me of my zombie (walking dead) life before I received the Good News.

 The Good News
Jesus died for all people so that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for the man who died and was brought back to life for them. Whoever is a believer in Christ is a new creation. The old way of living has disappeared. A new way of living has come into existence. God has done all this. 2 Corinthians 5:15,17-18
Thank you, Jesus! What an adventure my life has become!

You Are What You Eat, Your Children Are What You Feed Them

My daughter has heard me on occasion say, "You are what you eat." I can just imagine her patting my belly saying, "Obviously". O my sweet, sweet daughter. :) Usually when I say that it has more to do with our spiritual life, like "You are fruit of the tree you hang around." Ahh those choice morsels from a loving parent. Well ok the sayings do not go over as well now that she is 17.

However in light of what was on my heart yesterday and what I have been chewing on (not physically, intellectually and spiritually :) ) The people and experiences that define or form me leads me to think about the people and experiences that formed and is forming my daughter. I feel like my time to be an extremely influential part of her forming is almost gone. Wow that was quick, I have been told that the time really ended about 5 years ago, in some cases ignorance is bliss.

In doing research for a class taught by Dr. Dean Blevins, I came across some information that I wish I could email to myself about 17 years back.

It is probably more important to start with the questions so that I can see where my answers line up.

How are we carrying out the The Great Commission to our primary disciples?

What are the principles behind faith?
1. How faith if formed?
2. Who is partnering with me?
3. Where is Christ in the lives of my children?
4. What is faith's primary influence-er?
5. What is my primary goal for my child? How do I begin and continue that path?
What are the primary activities that form faith in children?

What are the characteristics of faith and what characteristics do I look for as evidence of faith in my children?

I plan to share and answer these questions a little more in depth with the parents of young children this Sunday. While my time as influence-er is almost up in some ways, I have been told that you never stop being a parent, so I am excited about what this means in my home and in our lives.

Read this in light of parenting, a true commission of God...
2 Corinthians 4:1-2 (The Message)
"Since God has so generously let us in on what he is doing, we’re not about to throw up our hands and walk off the job just because we run into occasional hard times. We refuse to wear masks and play games. We don’t maneuver and manipulate behind the scenes. And we don’t twist God’s Word to suit ourselves. Rather, we keep everything we do and say out in the open, the whole truth on display, so that those who want to can see and judge for themselves in the presence of God."

My husband reminds me and tells God in his prayers frequently that we dedicated our little girl to God early on...

Lord, Continue to capture the attention and affection of my one and only daughter by Your grace. In the Name of Your one and only Son, Jesus. Amen.

Highlights

My high school, which is really far in my rear view mirror, sends out an alumni magazine every six months call Highlights. CCES is a private school, so of course the primary reason is to raise funds, but I read through it every time mainly because of the back section. Each class representative gathers milestone moments in the lives of those from each class. I get to rejoice with those who got married or had a baby, or I can mourn and pray for those that have experienced loss. At church we do the same thing, but we call it Joys and Sorrows.

These highlights allow us as a larger community to give attention to times in peoples life that redefine who they are. We get to look deeper into their journeys. As a family, my husband and my daughter and I celebrate birthdays and accomplishments, while at the same time we share burdens and struggles. These milestones help to give us something to look forward to or give us strength to overcome. I understand who I am in this context of experiencing life with my family, but I also understand who I am as I journey and share journeys with those in my church family, my growing up school family, my extended family, my work family.

There is a song by Rich Mullens called "Creed". Part of the chorus says talking about faith, "I did not make it, no it is making me." These stories, highlights, milestones are making me and those around me and I am just realizing that it is also those that are journeying with me in some way who are also helping to define who I am. I am ultimately defined and identified by the One who is closest to me, My Heavenly Father. I thank God for those in my family and my church family who have over the years helped me to define who I am. My mom told me over and over, "You can be anything you want to be." With that freedom, I am so grateful to her and to God who changed my "want".

2 Corinthians 3:17-18
17 This Lord is the Spirit. Wherever the Lord’s Spirit is, there is freedom. 18 As all of us reflect the Lord’s glory with faces that are not covered with veils, we are being changed into his image with ever-increasing glory. This comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

May the God of Vision and Power continue to reveal Himself to us and through us. Amen

What's That Smell?

My husband does not like strong scents. Strong perfume gives him a headache, so I can not wear perfume  smell better. So my goal is to not smell bad, more than to smell good.

15 To God we are the aroma of Christ among those who are saved and among those who are dying. 16 To some people we are a deadly fragrance, while to others we are a life-giving fragrance.
2 Corinthians 2:15-16 (GWT)
With regard to Christ, our life as Christians should either reek of death for the pre-Christian or reek of life for our brothers and sisters. When and if our lives do not smell with the aroma of Christ...we can pray as the Psalmist prays in Psalm 51:10 and put to music by Keith Green.

Create in Me a Clean Heart by Keith Green

Create in me a clean heart, oh God
And renew a right spirit within me
Create in me a clean heart, oh God
And renew a right spirit within me

Cast me not away from Thy presence, oh Lord
And take not Thy holy spirit from me
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation
And renew a right spirit within me

Create in me a clean heart, oh God
And renew a right spirit within me
Create in me a clean heart, oh God
And renew a right spirit within me

Cast me not away from Thy presence, oh Lord
Take not Thy holy spirit from me
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation
And renew a right spirit within me

Create in me a clean heart, oh God
And renew a right spirit within me
Create in me a clean heart, oh God
And renew a right spirit within me

Cast me not away from Thy presence, oh Lord
Take not Thy holy spirit from me
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation
And renew a right spirit within me

He is Here...He is Good.

Matthew 8:34  Everyone from the city went to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to leave their territory.

After Jesus delivered two men who were possessed by demons, he commanded the demons to go into the herd of pigs. What a miracle! But fear settled in cause' they did not know the rest of the story. But we do.

John 10:11  "I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd gives his life for the sheep."

All of the statements of "Do not be afraid" are not so much commands but promises. If we will trust and yield and rest in the arms of The Almighty, His Presence and His Peace will overwhelm our struggles and our sighs.

I still sigh. In that prayer, He is still good.

Delight in the Overlap

The Lord directs the steps of the godly.
He delights in every detail of their lives. Psalm 37:23 (NLT)

One Thursday each month, my pastor teaches a Sack lunch session. Yesterday, he was talking about how Oswald Chambers not only lived during the same time as Charles and Lettie Cowman, but they were good friends. It delights me to think  the authors of My Utmost for His Highest and Streams in the Desert were  lives that intersected and overlapped. How many times have those devotionals spoken and affirmed and overlapped in my own life.

This past Summer we had an indoor campmeeting where our staff pastors were asked to speak on portions of the Sermon on the Mount. Even though we did not talk ahead of time, God overlapped the revelation of Himself in a way that could not be planned.

I know that you could probably tell me stories of how God has done that in your life. Whether it is running into someone or calling them at just the right time, a word spoken that confirmed what God was already speaking in your life, a card that said exactly what you needed, or a still small voice in the midst of chaos that allows you to rest in the Hand of the Great Almighty God.

He delights in the details in our lives, it seems the more I delight in His fingerprint, the more I see Him overlapping in my life and the lives of those around me.

Controlled Burn

Our local church women's retreat is coming up in a few weeks. My prayer for me and all of the others who will be joining us is echoed in this song...

I Will Never Be the Same Again - Hillsong

Part of the chorus is
"Sweep away the darkness, burn away the chaff"

1 Corinthians 3:12-15
People may build on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw. The day will make what each one does clearly visible because fire will reveal it. That fire will determine what kind of work each person has done. If what a person has built survives, he will receive a reward. If his work is burned up, he will suffer the loss."

A retreat and other gatherings like it are like a controlled burn. A controlled burn or "swailing" is a tool used by foresters to reduce the fuel buildup(wood, hay, and stubble) and prevent more serious, all-consuming fires.

Lord,
I want my life to not only be built on You as my firm foundation, but also to be built up with the kind of life that is pleasing to you. My eyes get blurry, even though I think I can see, and I depend on you to give me eyes to see. Thank you for times of refreshing like retreats, but more than that for times where I can intentionally give You time to search me and see what is built up in my life. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Layin' Awake Grateful

Last night I was layin' awake late. Not worrying or thinking about details and things that would normally keep someone up...

I was layin' awake grateful. Thinking of people, situations, and blessings that have impacted my life.

When I was in 2nd Grade, my teacher, Ms. Riley, noticed that I could not read or do math. This was my first year at Christ Church Episcopal School and most people thought I would have to struggle for years to catch up or repeat a grade. Not Ms. Riley, she tutored me every morning beginning at 5am. She taught me "Chizzembop", the best way to learn math ever. By the end of that school year, she had me working at the same level as my classmates. Because of her and many others, my life's trajectory changed.

Truly, through the grace of God, I blessed before I knew how to say thank you.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17

Freedom

I heard a great truth on the radio a few days ago

"Freedom means that we are free to struggle, but we are not struggling to be free."

In John 8, Jesus said to the believers, "If you live by what I say, you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Freedom does not come after the struggle, but after the obedience and we have been set free from sin and death as believers. We are free to live a life in obedience to Jesus. Then and only then can we set out on the adventure of knowing Him and making Him known.

Yesterday I was in Kids Church and a little girl skipped up to me. She asked if I could put the straw in her Caprison. Of course, as a grown, capable adult that has opened countless juice packs, I put the straw in the bag and sent her skipping back to her seat. A few minutes later she came back up to me and asked me to fix it. As I looked, I saw nothing wrong with how the straw went in and nothing was spilling out, so I returned the juice with a questionable look on my face. She said, "Turn it over." ...Yep I had put the straw all the way through, she sucked and sucked and got nothing. (Back to the drawing board, o capable adult).

This week I'm resting in Colossians 3:15. "And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful." How many times have my circumstances run me through like that straw and in the moment that I am the most parched, I find myself sucking for all I am worth to no avail, forgetting to "LET" the peach of God "RULE" in my heart. Lord, in the desert times of my life, guide my straw to the great reservoir that is You.

A few more ways to mull it over...

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful." Col 3:15 KJV

"Also, let Christ's peace control you. God has called you into this peace by bringing you into one body. Be thankful." Col 3:15 GWT

"And let the peace of Christ be ruling in your hearts, as it was the purpose of God for you to be one body; and give praise to God at all times." Col 3:15 BBE

"Let the peace that Christ gives control your thinking, because you were all called together in one body to have peace. Always be thankful." Col 3:15 NCV

Growing up, I remember getting into things that I should not and subsequently being asked to explain myself. So I will begin this blog by doing just that. I will explain myself to the best of my ability.

My name is Camelot. That name is the only name that has been with me my whole life for various reasons both formally and informally. I learned a few years ago that my name means "a place where peace dwells". The one anchor for my soul for the last 20 years has been the reality of Peace - The Prince of Peace dwelling within my heart. He is my Strong Tower, my Shelter, my Savior. He is Jesus.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Col. 3:15

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other. ~Mother Teresa
